Mimecast—Senior Software Engineer

Job description

Description: Senior Software Engineer – Managed Threat Response Bengaluru, India About Mimecast Mimecast is a leading cybersecurity company that helps organizations protect their people, data, and communications. With over 42,000 customers worldwide, Mimecast has a long history of excellence in Data Archiving and eDiscovery and is recognised as a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Communications Governance and Archiving Solutions. We are pioneers in Human Risk Management, recognizing that people are both an organization's greatest asset and its most significant security vulnerability. Our platform addresses the human element of cybersecurity through advanced threat detection, awareness training, Incydr risk management, and data governance. Our Governance, Compliance & Insight products play a critical role in this mission, ensuring that communications data is archived, discoverable, and compliant, enabling organizations to manage the risk that stems from human actions. AI-First Engineering at Mimecast Mimecast is an AI-First engineering organization. Our teams actively leverage AI-powered development tools across all facets of engineering, from code development to testing, documentation, and operations. We're looking for leaders who don't just use AI tools but champion their adoption and establish new ways of working. Our AI leadership extends beyond how we build to what we build. Our Mihra AI agent delivers 7x faster threat response for customers, and we're recognized as "Agents of Change" in Human Risk Management. Engineers here work at the intersection of cutting-edge AI tooling and AI-powered security products that protect organizations worldwide. The driving force behind Collaboration Security at Mimecast Dive into the forefront of innovation with our Managed Threat Response engineering team, where we build the platforms that detect, investigate, and remediate threats on behalf of our customers. Our products leverage the latest technologies and advances in Artificial Intelligence to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals — and we build them the same way. Why Join Our Team? “At Mimecast we process over a billion emails and collaboration events every day, and our team is what stands between our customers and the threats hiding in that traffic. We are building an engineering team where AI is how the work gets done — not a side experiment. This role is for someone who has already made that shift and can pull a team along with them: lead the design, set the quality bar, and show others what good looks like.” – Hiring Manager What You'll Do As a Senior Software Engineer you will lead the engineering design for significant features and system areas across Mailroom and Threat Portal, with contributions into our Managed Email Incident Response and Remediation products. You will work as an AI-first engineer and deliberately raise the level at which the team around you does the same. Your responsibilities will include: - Lead the engineering design for significant system areas, from framing the problem through to a system running reliably in production. - Design distributed components that stay available and scale horizontally, reasoning about failure modes — race conditions, partial failure, data consistency — before they reach production rather than after. - Produce design documents others can build from, and model disciplined practice: comprehensive test coverage, proactive observability, and clear technical documentation. - Use agentic AI development tools as your primary working method, and build out the team's practice around them — reusable workflows, context and prompt patterns, evaluations — so that AI is used rigorously rather than as a shortcut. - Own the quality of everything you merge, regardless of what produced it, and set the standard the team applies when reviewing AI-generated code. - Balance technical trade-offs against product and delivery commitments, and make that reasoning visible to Product and Engineering leadership. - Mentor junior and mid-level engineers deliberately through pairing, design review, and code review, and align stakeholders behind a technical direction the team can execute with confidence. - Lead during critical incidents spanning multiple services — diagnosis, clear communication, and the preventive work that follows — and monitor resource usage for cost savings that do not compromise performance or reliability. - Work with Product, Support, and other engineering teams to drive cross-team collaboration, and engage in Agile activities: backlog refinement, planning, design and code reviews, demos, and retrospectives. What You'll Bring We are looking for a strong engineer first. Depth in any single framework or tool matters far less to us than how you think, how fast you learn, and the quality of what you and the people around you ship. - Deep expertise and system-level design judgement. Command of your core stack plus fluency in adjacent systems, and a track record of designing components whose failure modes, cost profile, and cross-service effects on reliability and security you thought about up front. - A track record of shipping and owning. Around six or more years building production software, including system areas you owned through multiple iterations, real incidents, and the architectural changes that followed. - Proven AI-first development practice, applied to others as well as yourself. Demonstrable day-to-day development with agentic coding tools rather than occasional autocomplete, plus evidence that you deliberately raised someone else's practice — workflows, tooling, patterns, or standards that others adopted and kept using. We work in Cursor, but we care that you have built this way, not which tool you used. - Critical judgement over AI output. A working understanding of where these tools fail — hallucinated APIs, plausible-but-wrong logic, silent security and performance regressions — the discipline never to merge code you cannot explain, and the credibility to hold a team to that line. - Strong proficiency in at least one modern backend language, and evidence that you have picked up others quickly. Our stack is primarily Python and Django; deep experience is welcome, but demonstrated ability to become productive fast matters more. - Practical platform skills. Relational data modelling and query performance (PostgreSQL or similar), distributed building blocks such as caching (Redis) and search engines (Elasticsearch), containerisation, CI/CD pipelines, and foundational AWS services. - Influence, deliberate mentorship, and clear written communication. You bring others with you rather than working around them, you explain technical concepts credibly to non-technical stakeholders, and you collaborate well across a team distributed over multiple time zones. - Nice to have: front-end experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, Angular or React; Java; prior work in cybersecurity or email security; and hands-on experience building LLM-backed application features such as retrieval, tool use, or evaluation harnesses. What We Bring Join our Managed Threat Response team to accelerate your career journey, working with cutting-edge technologies on projects that have real customer impact. You will be given first-class AI development tooling and the time and mandate to get genuinely good with it: we treat AI engineering capability as a skill we invest in and measure, and we judge engineers on the outcomes they ship and the quality they sustain — not on lines of code written. Mimecast offers formal and on-the-job learning opportunities and maintains a comprehensive benefits package that helps our employees and their family members sustain a healthy lifestyle. We believe in 'growth that's good', we have 'a culture that cares' and we are on a 'mission that matters'. Our Hybrid Model: We provide you with the flexibility to live balanced, healthy lives through our hybrid working model that champions both collaborative teamwork and individual flexibility. Employees are expected to come to the office at least two days per week, because working together in person: - Fosters a culture of collaboration, communication, performance and learning - Drives innovation and creativity within and between teams - Introduces employees to priorities outside of their immediate realm - Ensures important interpersonal relationships and connections with one another and our community! #LI-GK1 Belonging at Mimecast Cybersecurity is a community effort.
